Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police have arrested three individuals, including the victim’s husband, in connection with the alleged murder of a woman in Cuttack district, officials reported on Sunday.

Jagmohan Meena, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Cuttack, praised the thorough investigation and collaboration between the Odisha Police, Gujarat Police, and various district police teams, highlighting community assistance in the case.

On the morning of December 13, the body of a woman was discovered on the banks of the Kathajodi River near the Kandarpur police station. Investigators, accompanied by a scientific team and a dog squad, collected evidence at the scene, including the murder weapon, a “Chapad.”

Initial examinations of CCTV footage and inquiries with nearby police stations and villages yielded no leads. However, police found significant clues in a blood-stained shirt and pants discovered in the river, which had a receipt from “New Star Tailors” sewn into them.

Cuttack’s DCP noted that, despite checking ten tailor shops across Odisha with similar names, no matches were found. Following extensive media coverage, an anonymous tip on WhatsApp pointed to a tailor shop in Bhanjanagar, Ganjam, which led to further investigation.

The owner of the shop, who had previously worked in Gujarat, informed police that the receipt design was commonly used there. Subsequently, Odisha Police reached out to their counterparts in Gujarat, where officers verified the tailor shops in Surat. They found a match for the receipt design at one shop and utilized UPI payment records to identify the blood-stained clothing as belonging to Jagannath Duhuri, 27, a resident of MahakalaPada in Kendrapara.

Acting on this information, Rayagada police arrested Duhuri while he was on a train heading to Surat on December 14. The authorities also apprehended Balaram Duhuri, the victim’s husband, and their cousin, Happi Duhuri. The motive behind the crime was reportedly a marital dispute, with Balaram suspecting his wife of having an affair. The accused will be presented in court on Monday.
