Patna: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has apprehended two individuals and captured a significant shipment of foreign cigarettes, estimated to be worth Rs 1.5 crore in the international market.
Acting on specific intelligence regarding cigarette smuggling from Myanmar, the DRI set up a trap at the Gaighat toll plaza on National Highway 57. Upon the arrival of a container vehicle registered in Haryana, DRI officials surrounded the vehicle and arrested the two suspects—both drivers and helpers from Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh.
A detailed inspection of the container revealed a consignment of cigarettes concealed among bamboo. The shipment, originating from Myanmar, had crossed into India through Arunachal Pradesh and was being transported from Guwahati, Assam, to Delhi.
The DRI is conducting further investigations to trace both the origin and intended distribution channels of the smuggled cigarettes, aiming to dismantle a larger trafficking network involved in this illegal trade.
This operation follows another significant crackdown by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on December 21 in Muzaffarpur, where an individual was arrested and 2 kg of morphine, valued at nearly Rs 5 crore in the international market, was seized. This substance had also been smuggled from Myanmar.
