Jammu: Two individuals are unaccounted for while seven others have been rescued after a passenger vehicle fell into a river in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident occurred on Thursday evening when the taxi, traveling from Poonch town to Surankote, lost control at Kalai Bridge and plunged into the river around 8:30 p.m.
A rescue operation was promptly initiated, led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Poonch, Shafqat Hussain. The seven rescued, including four women, were transported to a hospital for medical attention.
Authorities reported that two individuals were swept away by the river, and search efforts are ongoing. The river’s current is strong due to heavy rainfall in the region.
Additionally, in a separate incident in the same district, a truck driver died when he lost control, causing his vehicle to roll down a mountainside in Chang village, Bufliaz. This accident also took place on Thursday.
Heavy rains over the past two days have resulted in rivers and streams rising dangerously high in Jammu division. There has also been significant snowfall in higher areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The last 24 hours brought light snow to Srinagar city and surrounding plains, while the Gulmarg ski resort received 1.5 feet of fresh snowfall. Areas like Zojila Pass, Gurez, and Razdan Pass saw up to 4 feet.
Due to the severe weather, authorities have closed the Srinagar-Jammu, Srinagar-Leh, and Mughal roads. The Meteorological (MeT) office forecasts that these weather conditions will persist into Friday. The ‘Khelo India 2025-winter sports in Gulmarg’ event has been postponed due to insufficient snow in the ski resort, but the recent snowfall suggests that winter sports could be organized imminently.
