Patna: In a major breakthrough for law enforcement, police in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur managed to arrest two notorious criminals following an intense gunfight on Thursday morning. Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar confirmed that Suraj Sahani and Neeraj Thakur, both from Motihari in East Champaran district, were captured. These individuals were wanted in over twenty criminal cases across several northern districts of Bihar.
According to SSP Kumar, the duo had a long record of involvement in serious crimes, including multiple loot incidents at Community Health Centers (CHCs) in Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Samastipur, and nearby areas. The police explained that the suspects had initially been taken into custody on Wednesday evening while being transferred to the district headquarters.
However, during the transfer, they managed to escape after pushing aside the escorting officers, in an incident that took place under the jurisdiction of Paro police station.
In a swift response, police issued alerts to surrounding stations via wireless communication. Acting on intelligence inputs, a team tracked the suspects to Chitor village, where they were surrounded. As the police closed in, the criminals opened fire, prompting a retaliatory exchange.
After a fierce gunbattle, both suspects were captured and sustained bullet wounds to their legs. They were subsequently given medical treatment and taken into custody.
It was revealed that Neeraj Thakur was carrying a cash reward of Rs 30,000 for his arrest. Police officials described the duo as serial offenders involved in numerous cases of loot, robbery, and dacoity. Their arrest marks a significant achievement for Muzaffarpur police, especially since both criminals were known for their agility and ability to evade capture for long periods.
SSP Kumar stated that an FIR has been filed against the two for attacking government personnel, and efforts are ongoing to dismantle their criminal network. He added that further arrests are likely following detailed interrogations of the apprehended criminals.
