Jaipur: The market in Udaipur remained shut on Friday following a minor disagreement that over escalated into a violent melee involving swords, leading to heightened tension around Teej Ka Chowk.
Heavy police presence has been deployed in the area to control the situation.
Eyewitnesses reported that two youths reached a vegetable stall in front of the Santoshi Mata Temple on Thursday evening and argued with the vendor, Satyaveer, over vegetable prices. The dispute soon turned aggressive, with the youths allegedly throwing stones at the shop before fleeing the scene.
Satyaveer later filed a complaint at Dhanmandi police station and continued his work. However, around 10 p.m., a group of 8 to 10 armed youths returned with swords and sticks, launching a brutal attack on him. Satyaveer sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at MB Hospital’s emergency ward.
Following the attack, locals and members of social groups gathered at the scene. In their anger, some protesters set fire to nearby vegetable carts and tin sheds, further escalating the unrest.
The police quickly established a security zone around Teej Ka Chowk, with Senior officials including Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal arriving to restore order.
Although shops initially reopened on Friday morning, traders and locals collectively decided to shut down all businesses in protest. They are demanding that District Collector Namit Mehta and SP Goyal visit the site and provide concrete assurances. Demonstrators are raising slogans against the administration, terming the incident a “serious lapse” in law enforcement.
Families of the injured and local groups have called for the immediate arrest of all those involved in the attack.
The police have detained one suspect and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify and apprehend others. SP Goyal assured that all culprits will be caught soon and urged the public to stay calm and refrain from spreading rumors.
Currently, the situation in Dhanmandi, Teej Ka Chowk, and nearby areas remains tense but under control. Market activity is still shut, and a sense of fear and unrest persists among residents.
