In the shared photographs, the former Prime Minister can be seen engrossed in the book “Swallowing the Sun,” authored by Puri’s wife, Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri. Lakshmi, a former assistant secretary-general at the United Nations and a former deputy executive director of UN Women, has also served as India’s ambassador to countries like Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Set in Maharashtra, Lakshmi Puri’s debut novel tells the story of two sisters, Malati and Kamla, navigating the tumultuous period from their village to erstwhile Bombay, engaging in the resistance movement, and grappling with “the big and small aspects of everyday life—love, loss, failure, and compromise.”

During the book launch earlier this year, Lakshmi Puri spoke about the inspiration behind the novel, drawing from her parents’ lives. She mentioned that her parents, Malati Desai and BG Murdeshwar, were active participants in the Independence struggle and lived extraordinary lives. While inspired by their stories, the novel is also a product of her imagination, aiming to celebrate the unsung heroes of the independence struggle—the ordinary people whose efforts accumulated into a movement.

A recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights, Lakshmi Puri’s book “Swallowing the Sun” is described as a tribute to India’s wisdom and eloquence, highlighting the power of love.
