New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu approved the Wakf (Amendment) Bill late Saturday evening. The government issued a gazette notification regarding the new law. Now the central government will issue a separate notification regarding the date of implementation of the new law. This bill (now law) was passed after 12 hours of discussion in the Lok Sabha on April 2 and in the Rajya Sabha on April 3.
Congress MP Mohammad Javed, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan have challenged the new law in separate petitions in the Supreme Court. These petitions state that the Waqf Amendment Act discriminates against the Muslim community. This Act also violates the fundamental rights of Muslims.
On this, Union Minister Rijiju said that the purpose of this law is to prevent discrimination, misuse and encroachment in Waqf properties. This bill (now law) was supported by 128 members in Rajya Sabha, while 95 opposed it. It was passed in Lok Sabha late night on 2 April. During this, 288 MPs voted in support and 232 voted against it.
Muslim Personal Law Board’s protest against Wakf Bill
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Saturday evening released a two-page letter in protest against the Waqf Bill. The AIMPLB said that we will hold a nationwide movement in collaboration with all religious, community-based and social organizations. This campaign will continue until the amendments are completely repealed.
All India Muslim Personal Law Board said-
“The Wakf Amendment Bill is a serious attack on Islamic values, religion and Sharia, religious and cultural freedom, communal harmony and the basic structure of the Indian Constitution. The support given by some political parties to the communal agenda of the BJP has completely exposed their so-called secular mask.”
