West Bengal: Goods train rams into Kanchenjunga Express; Death toll increases to 15, 60 injured

Police reached the spot and rescue operation is underway.

Darjeeling: The death toll has increased in the Bengal Train Mishap. So far 15 people have been reported dead whereas 60 injured have been rescued. The injured are undergoing treatment at the nearby hospitals.

8 people including 2 loco pilots and a guard have died in the accident. Eastern Railway CPRO Kaushik Mitra confirmed this. News agency PTI has reported 15 deaths and 60 injuries.

Kaushik Mitra said that two parcel and one SLR coaches were attached at the end of the Kanchenjunga Express train. There were no passengers in it. 5 coaches of the train have been damaged. A special train has left for Sealdah at 12:40 pm. Most of the passengers in the train are from Malda and Bolpur. Train service has been started on single line.

Kanchenjunga Express (13174) left Agartala at 8:15 am on June 16. It was to reach Sealdah at 7:20 pm on June 17. The accident took place at Rangapani near New Jalpaiguri station. The train was stopped at Ruidhasa here due to red signal. Meanwhile, a goods train coming from behind hit it.

PM Modi condoles loss of lives in West Bengal Train Mishap

PM Modi in a Post on X, condoled the loss of lives in the rail accident. He said that Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is on way to the accident site. PM Modi said, “The railway accident in West Bengal is saddening. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to officials and took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist the affected. The Railways Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji is on the way to the site of the mishap as well.”

As per the latest development, Police on the spot carrying out rescue operations have confirmed that nearly 20 to 25 passengers have been injured while five have been reported dead. Three coaches of the express train were damaged in the accident.

Abhishek Roy, additional SP of Darjeeling police said, “Five passengers have died, 20-25 injured in the accident. The situation is serious. The incident occurred when a goods train rammed into Kanchenjunga Express”

Several passengers were injured when a goods train rammed into the Kanchenjunga Express from behind in Rudhiasa, Darjeeling District of West Bengal on Monday morning. Police reached the spot and rescue operation is underway. The exact number of people injured in the train mishap is not known yet.

After accident, Sealdah Eastern Railway set up a control desk at Rangapani station after the Kanchenjunga express train rammed by a goods train at Ruidhasa in Darjeeling district of West Bengal

Sources in the Railways said that the goods container train overshot the signal and hit the rear parcel coach of the Kanchanjunga Express. The train has two parcels and one coach for the guard.

Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Divisional Railway officials have reached the accident site. A total of 15 ambulances and medical equipment have also reached the site of the mishap. Officials are reviewing the situation, the Railway officials said.

The accident took place at Rangapani area in the Katihar Railway Division ahead of New Jalpaiguri Junction at around 8:45 am today. Earlier in the day, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the accident took place in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.
