Mysuru: A woman in Ambale village, Mysuru district, Karnataka, tragically took her own life due to fears of harassment from microfinance loan recovery agents. Identified as 53-year-old Jayasheela, she consumed poisonous tablets, according to police reports.

Jayasheela had borrowed ₹5 lakh for farming and dairy activities, but faced severe financial difficulties when a cow she purchased died, and her crops failed to yield a good income. Struggling with a monthly EMI of ₹20,000, she felt overwhelmed and unable to continue her normal life. She bought the poisonous tablets meant for agricultural use and committed suicide in nearby Hullahalli village. Nanjangud Rural police are currently investigating the case.

This incident comes shortly after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting on January 25 to address issues related to microfinance institutions. He assured the public of the government’s commitment to protecting borrowers, announcing plans for new legislation to prevent harassment. He stated that strict legal action would be taken against those who intimidate borrowers and that a new law would soon be introduced to safeguard their interests, allowing for voluntary complaint filing.

The BJP criticized the Congress-led government, claiming that microfinance scams would not have escalated without the current administration’s support.
