New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated on Thursday that the efforts to clean the Yamuna River are progressing and are being carried out within a specified timeline.
“The work to clean the Yamuna is ongoing. We are desilting the drains, with hundreds of officials and numerous machines actively working on the ground. Efforts are underway in every area, and the government is committed to completing the work on time,” CM Gupta emphasized.
Additionally, she announced plans for a new park on 50 acres of land in Uttam Nagar that belongs to the Flood and Irrigation Department, which had been under encroachment for years and left unused. “Today, we have decided to create a beautiful park on this land,” she added.
Meanwhile, Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma mentioned that the government is focused on constructing as many roads as possible before the monsoon season arrives. “We aim to build as many roads as we can before the rains come, and we have set a target to recarpet roads throughout Delhi. We will ensure no roads remain dusty, as this contributes to pollution. We are doing our best to prevent waterlogging during the upcoming rainy season,” Verma stated.
Earlier in the day, CM Gupta, along with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Minister Parvesh Verma, inspected the supplementary drain at Wazirabad in the capital. The Flood and Irrigation Department has been given special responsibility to ensure timely desilting of drains, particularly the Wazirabad drain, which is significant for the cleaning of the Yamuna.
Significantly, following the BJP’s historic electoral victory with 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, the initiative to clean the Yamuna began, with trash skimmers, weed harvesters, and dredge utility vehicles deployed on February 16.
Pollution in the Yamuna was a major concern during the Delhi Assembly elections, prompting political parties to criticize one another over issues related to pollution, encroachments, and flood management. The BJP questioned the AAP’s commitment to fulfilling promises regarding the Yamuna’s cleanliness.
