Youth arrested for sexually harassing woman in Chennai

Chennai: A man from Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a woman software engineer in Chennai’s Perungudi area. According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday night in Perungudi, an area densely populated with IT companies. The victim, a young woman from Kerala working at a private tech.

According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday night in Perungudi, an area densely populated with IT companies. The victim, a young woman from Kerala working at a private tech firm nearby, was reportedly assaulted, gagged, and harassed while returning home.

Following her complaint, Chennai police swiftly launched an investigation and identified the accused, 30-year-old Lokeshwaran, a resident of Ramanathapuram. He was detained and interrogated by authorities.

During questioning, Lokeshwaran admitted to committing the act while under the influence of alcohol. Police clarified that he did not know the victim personally, and the assault appeared to be unprovoked and random.

The victim received immediate medical treatment and counseling support, shaken by the incident. The case has been registered under relevant IPC sections related to sexual assault and harassment.

A senior police officer from Adyar police district stated, “The accused has confessed to the crime, stating he was intoxicated at the time. He has been remanded to judicial custody.”

Women’s rights activists and local women’s groups have called for increased patrolling and surveillance, especially in secluded areas near workplaces.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events and are planning to file a charge sheet soon, aiming to expedite the case. The police also urged citizens to report any suspicious activity promptly and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding women’s safety in Chennai.
