Kolkata: In Bankura district of West Bengal, a young man accused of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl was reportedly lynched by villagers in the early hours of Wednesday.

Patrasayar Police Station has initiated two separate investigations: one into the allegations of rape and murder, and another into the lynching of the accused.

The individual lynched by the local residents has been identified as Lalu Prasad Lohar. The young girl involved was only eight years old.

According to statements from villagers to the police, the accused lured the girl to a secluded spot during the night. There, he allegedly raped her in a nearby forest area, strangled her to death, and began digging a hole to hide her body. However, when villagers noticed what he was doing, they alerted others in the community.

The villagers approached and found the suspect attempting to flee the village. They caught him and, upon interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime. Enraged, some villagers started attacking him, resulting in his death early on Wednesday due to the injuries sustained in the mob assault.

The police were called to the scene and recovered the remains of both the girl and the accused. Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations.

Authorities registered two separate cases related to the incident but have yet to make any arrests concerning the lynching.

The father of the girl expressed his grief, saying, “My daughter went missing after the rain stopped last night. Now I have lost everything.”

West Bengal has been in the news for several cases of rape and murder since last year, including the widely discussed case of a woman junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, who was assaulted and murdered inside the hospital premises in August last year.
