According to the module, between 1947 and 1950, Partition shattered India’s unity, created hostile borders, led to mass killings and displacement, deepened communal distrust, devastated the economies of Punjab and Bengal, and put Jammu and Kashmir on a path of social, economic and demographic decline, which was later worsened by terrorism.

Modules not included in the regular syllabus

NCERT’s special modules are not a part of the course, they are supplementary material that is prepared to explain a particular topic to children. It is taught to children through posters, discussions and debates. Recently Operation Sindoor was also added to the special module.

The introduction of the special module also includes the words of PM Narendra Modi. Modi had said, ‘The pain of Partition can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lives were lost due to the foolishness and hateful violence of the people. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices, our people will celebrate August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.’

Last month, a new review of the Mughal period was added to the syllabus for class 8.

Recently, a new interpretation of the religious decisions, cultural contributions and cruelty of the Mughal rulers has been given in the NCERT Class 8 Social Science book. This book will be implemented in schools from the 2025-26 academic session.

NCERT said- it is important to know the roots of history

The book also mentions incidents of destruction of temples in Banaras, Mathura and Somnath and atrocities on Jain, Sikh, Sufi and Parsi communities. Regarding this, an NCERT official said, ‘The events of history cannot be erased or denied, but it would be wrong to blame anyone for them today. Understanding the beginning of lust for power, atrocities or wrong ambitions is the right way to create a future where these incidents do not happen again.’
