New Sacrilege law challenged in High Court; Read to know why

The Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act 2026, enacted by the Punjab government regarding sacrilege, has been challenged in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. According to the information received, a public interest litigation has been filed by Simranjit Singh of Jalandhar.

It has been said that the secular principle of the country has been violated in the act. Let us tell you that this act was passed by the Punjab government on April 13.

The petitioner alleges that this act violates the secular principles of the country, because no act can be made only for a specific religion; it does not even mention the sacrilege of all other religions.

Apart from this, the petitioner also said that by amending this act, it now provides for life imprisonment. This life imprisonment comes under the BNS section; therefore, the approval of the President was required for this act. However, the Punjab government notified this amendment after the approval of the Governor, which is wrong.

On all these grounds, this petition has been filed in the High Court today, which is likely to be heard by the High Court in the coming days.
