NHAI Orders FASTag Banks to Verify Vehicle Registration Numbers

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday directed all FASTag issuing banks to immediately verify the Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) associated with the FASTags issued by them.

    Reason behind the decision

This move follows complaints that there were discrepancies between the vehicle number recorded by the FASTag reader and the number on the vehicle’s number plate.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, such discrepancies can lead to revenue loss and penal action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Focus on the New Toll System

This decision will enhance the accuracy and reliability of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.

NHAI stated that accurate vehicle data is crucial for the upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system, as further action will depend on it.

    Checking Old FASTags

It was reported that several errors have been found in FASTags issued before the VAHAN database was integrated.

As such, banks have been instructed to verify all FASTags and blacklist those with incorrect or invalid vehicle numbers.
