NHM employees in Punjab on strike today; stage sit-ins outside Civil Surgeon offices

The NHM Joint Front Punjab has launched an agitation against the government in protest against the failure to resolve the pending financial demands of National Health Mission (NHM) employees in Punjab. In accordance with the Front’s decision, an indefinite protest and work-stoppage strike is commencing today outside all Civil Surgeon offices across the state.

Routine operations at health institutions across Punjab are likely to be disrupted due to this strike. Union leaders have clarified that the strike and sit-in protests will continue until the government provides a concrete and satisfactory resolution to their demands. They stated that they were compelled to take this step while keeping the public interest in mind.

The Front further asserted that the Punjab government and the Health Department would be held solely responsible for any disruptions to state health services or inconvenience caused to the general public during the strike.

Demands Pending for Four and a Half Years

NHM Joint Front Punjab leaders Sunil Targotra, Gaurav Sharma, and Paras stated that they have clarified their position by sending an official letter to the Mission Director, National Health Mission (Punjab). They noted that employees have been holding continuous meetings with the government and the Health Department regarding their legitimate demands for approximately four and a half years.

The employees’ key demands are as follows:

    * Implementation of the ‘equal pay for equal work’ principle.
    * Immediate release of the long-delayed loyalty bonus.
    * A respectable hike in employee salaries.

Not Even a Single Rupee Increase in Salary

Expressing their resentment, the Front leaders stated that despite repeated meetings and assurances, there has not been even a one-rupee increase in the employees’ salaries to date. Nor have any concrete steps been taken to resolve their demands.

The union has warned that the agitation will be intensified if the pending financial demands are not resolved soon. They reiterated that the Punjab government and the Health Department would be held responsible for any inconvenience caused to the general public during this period.
