NIA Arrests Baba Beant in Shambhu Railway Track Blast Case; Probe Focuses on Foreign Handlers

The investigation into the bomb blast that happened on the Shambhu-Rajpura railway track (Dedicated Freight Corridor) on April 27 this year has now been taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). After registering an FIR in the case, the NIA arrested Gurjinder Singh, aka Baba Beant, from Patiala jail on a production warrant. The agency has obtained an 8-day remand for the accused from the NIA court in Mohali.

In court, the NIA argued that it is necessary to question the accused about his connections with handlers from Pakistan, Malaysia, and other foreign countries to uncover the entire conspiracy. After hearing the arguments, the court sent the accused on remand.

What happened on the night of the blast, explained in 3 points:

1. The main accused, Jagrup Singh, aka Rupa, and his associate Gurjinder Singh, aka Baba Beant, had gone near Shambhu to plant an IED bomb on the Special Freight Corridor (freight train railway track).

2. The bomb exploded prematurely while being activated. The blast was so powerful that Jagarup Singh died on the spot.

3. Gurjinder Singh was standing a little distance away, so he survived and took advantage of the darkness to escape from the scene.

The same gang was behind all three incidents
Punjab Police and NIA investigations revealed that the same gang was involved in all three incidents. This includes the hand grenade attack on the CIA staff office in Moga on November 7, 2025. Then, there was the IED blast on the railway track in Sirhind on January 23, 2026, which damaged the engine of a train. After that, on April 27, 2026, the recent blast occurred on the Shambhu railway track. Interrogation revealed that this single module carried out all three major incidents.

A large cache of weapons seized
After the arrest of Gurjinder Singh and the capture of other module members Pradeep Singh Khalsa, Kulwinder, Satnam, and Gurpreet, the NIA and local police seized a large quantity of weapons and explosives. These included rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), hand grenades, IEDs, and advanced foreign pistols. According to the investigation agencies, these weapons were sent across the border via drones.
