NIA Seeks Fresh Details from US in 26/11 Mumbai Attacks Case Linked to Tahawwur Rana

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sought a fresh set of details from the United States government under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process in connection with the ongoing probe into the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Tahawwur Rana, official sources said on Wednesday.

Fresh Queries After Rana’s Extradition to India

According to sources, the latest MLAT request was routed through the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and forwarded to the U.S. authorities via the Indian Embassy in Washington.

“The information sought is expected to aid the ongoing investigation and strengthen the case against him,” sources added.

These additional queries were raised months after Rana’s interrogation following his extradition to India, and are expected to shed further light on his role in the 2008 Mumbai terror conspiracy.

Rana’s Role in the 26/11 Terror Plot

Tahawwur Rana is a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which left 166 people dead and over 238 injured. The NIA has accused Rana of conspiring with David Coleman Headley, members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI) to carry out coordinated terrorist attacks in India.

The case is registered as RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI under multiple sections related to terrorism and criminal conspiracy.

Supplementary Chargesheet Filed in July

In July 2025, the NIA filed a first supplementary chargesheet before the special NIA court in New Delhi, which included documents related to Rana’s extradition and new evidence collected during the investigation.

Additionally, in compliance with a court order dated June 6, 2025, the agency submitted a compliance report under Section 207 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) regarding the supply of documents linked to the earlier 2011 chargesheet.

Extradition from the United States

Rana was formally arrested on April 10, 2025, after being extradited from the United States. His extradition followed an extensive legal process, during which he filed multiple appeals—including an emergency application before the U.S. Supreme Court—all of which were dismissed.

He was brought to New Delhi aboard a special flight from Los Angeles, escorted by teams from the National Security Guard (NSG) and the NIA, including senior officials.

India–US Coordination Key to Extradition

The extradition was achieved through coordinated efforts between India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs, and U.S. agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Department of Justice (USDoJ).

Officials described the handover as a “significant milestone” in India’s ongoing campaign to bring terrorists and their facilitators to justice, regardless of where they may be hiding.
