New Delhi: BJP National President Nitin Nabin will lead a foot march titled ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk on Wednesday as the party prepares a nationwide campaign amid the ongoing political row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, state BJP president Harsh Malhotra, MPs and other senior party leaders are also expected to join the march.
The BJP will organise similar foot marches across the country on Wednesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states are expected to take part in programmes in their respective regions.
The campaign is aimed at mobilising party workers and supporters while responding to Opposition allegations over democracy and the electoral process. Through these programmes, the BJP plans to present its position on the ongoing revision of electoral rolls.
BJP Steps Up Campaign Amid SIR Row
The planned march comes amid growing political tensions over the SIR exercise. Opposition parties have alleged irregularities in the revision process and questioned the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The BJP’s campaign is also significant ahead of a proposed rally by the INDIA bloc in Delhi on November 1. The Opposition alliance has announced a ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally at Ramlila Maidan to protest against alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process.
The INDIA bloc has also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing electoral authorities of failing to address concerns over alleged ‘vote chori’.
BJP Plans Month-Long Nationwide Outreach
In response to the Opposition’s planned mobilisation, the BJP is preparing a month-long counter-campaign beginning November 1. The campaign will feature coordinated padyatras across the country.
Senior BJP leaders, Union Ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states are expected to participate in the marches in their respective regions. The party plans to use the campaign to mobilise its workers and reach out to the public.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has issued a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the event, covering security and traffic coordination arrangements from October 25 to November 3.
