ROHTAK, HARYANA: BJP president Nitin Nabin on Sunday accused the Congress of attempting to run the country’s democracy according to the wishes of the Gandhi family, alleging that the party had failed to establish democratic practices within its own organisation.
Addressing the BJP’s ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ rally in Rohtak, Nabin also criticised the Congress over its protest rally in Delhi, saying it should have apologised to the Sikh community for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots instead of taking to the streets.
His remarks came as the INDIA bloc held its ‘Dilli Chalo’ rally at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital.
Nabin Accuses Congress of Dynastic Politics
Targeting Rahul Gandhi, the BJP chief alleged that Congress leaders wanted the country’s laws and democratic institutions to function according to the interests of the Gandhi family.
He said the Congress should first establish internal democracy and end what he described as Rahul Gandhi’s dynastic control over the party.
Nabin also accused the Opposition of deliberately creating an atmosphere of instability and chaos in the country. He alleged that Rahul Gandhi was acting at the behest of foreign powers and serving their agendas.
Referring to calls for regime change, he said the government had been formed through the people’s mandate and could not be challenged through such demands.
Invokes 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots
Nabin questioned the Congress’s decision to hold a protest in Delhi, invoking the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and referring to a controversial remark made by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi after the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
He said Rahul Gandhi should have expressed remorse and apologised to the Sikh community over the violence instead of leading protests against the government.
The BJP chief also referred to the Allahabad High Court’s 1975 verdict setting aside Indira Gandhi’s election, alleging that the Congress had a history of disrespecting the people’s mandate.
Raises Issue of Deleted Votes and Infiltration
Nabin also responded to Opposition claims that 13 crore votes had been deleted, asserting that BJP and NDA workers could provide details of the deleted votes.
He further accused Opposition parties of protecting infiltrators and said BJP and NDA workers would work to ensure that those allegedly living illegally in the country were deported.
Concluding his remarks, Nabin said India’s democracy should be governed by the Constitution rather than the interests of any political family. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for upholding constitutional democracy.
