Nitish Kumar sworn in as Rajya Sabha member

Patna: Nitish Kumar was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on Friday, marking a significant milestone in his long political career.

He arrived in New Delhi on Thursday, accompanied by Sanjay Jha and Vijay Kumar Choudhary, to complete the formalities associated with joining the Upper House.

Unique record of serving in all four legislative houses

With this development, Nitish Kumar has joined the select group of leaders who have served in all four legislative houses of the country—the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha.

This is considered a significant achievement in his political career.

Resignation from Legislative Council, a long journey ends

He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 this year and resigned as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on March 30.

With this resignation, his long association with the Bihar Legislative Council ended.

He first became a member in 2006 and served four consecutive terms: 2006-2012, 2012-2018, 2018-2024, and after 2024.

Indications of leaving the Chief Minister’s post, focus on a new role

Since becoming Chief Minister in November 2005, Nitish Kumar has served as a member of the Legislative Council for most of his time, rather than contesting assembly elections.

However, he has previously served as an MLA from Harnaut and a Lok Sabha MP.

Following his resignation from the Legislative Council, he will also have to resign as Chief Minister under constitutional rules.

Upon arriving in New Delhi, he said, “I’ve done a lot of work in Bihar. Now I feel I should stay here, so I’ll work here.”

He added, “I’ll resign from my role in Patna and work here. A new Chief Minister and ministers will be appointed in three or four days.”

His entry into the Rajya Sabha is being seen as the beginning of a new chapter in his political career, which began in 1985.

His new role could also influence Bihar politics in the future.
