Delhi Police are investigating the death of 38-year-old Deepti Chaurasia, daughter-in-law of late pan masala industrialist Kamal Kishore, who owned the Kamla Pasand and Rajshree Pan Masala brands. Deepti was found dead at her Vasant Vihar home on Tuesday, with police stating that she died by suicide.
Officials said Deepti was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in her bedroom. A diary recovered from the room has become a key element in the investigation, as it reportedly contains references to marital discord with her husband, Harpreet Chaurasia. The couple married in 2010 and have a 14-year-old son.
According to police sources, Harpreet had left home for the gym on Tuesday morning. He was later contacted by his mother, who told him that Deepti was not responding to calls or knocks on the door. When the family entered the room, they found her hanging, after which police were informed.
Investigators said the diary includes handwritten entries indicating unhappiness in the marriage. A police official told ANI that Deepti wrote about a “dispute” with her husband. One line reportedly read, “If there is no love and trust in a relationship, what is the point of life?” Another investigator said that although the entries expressed emotional distress and phrases such as “no love and trust”, no individual was named or blamed in the writing.
The diary has several remaining pages that are now being examined to build a clearer picture of her mental state in the days before her death. Police have sent the diary for forensic analysis to confirm the handwriting and to check for any erased or overwritten content.
Amid the investigation, Deepti’s brother has levelled serious accusations against Harpreet. He has alleged that she faced torture within the marriage and claimed that Harpreet was involved in extra-marital affairs. He also alleged that Deepti had been distressed for a long time. These claims have been formally recorded by the police and will be examined as part of the inquiry.
However, the Chaurasia family has strongly denied the allegations. They have maintained that there were no disputes between the couple and have dismissed accusations of harassment or infidelity. Family members stated that Deepti had not expressed any complaints to them and that her death has come as a shock.
Police officials said an inquest is underway, with statements being collected from relatives, household staff and others associated with the family. Investigators are also reviewing phone records and digital communications. The post-mortem examination is expected to provide further clarity.
As the inquiry progresses, police say they will evaluate all available material, including the diary entries, allegations by Deepti’s family members and evidence gathered from the residence. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under detailed examination.
