The Jalandhar Bar Association has again declared a “no-work day” in the court today (Tuesday), accusing the police of negligence and bias. Consequently, all court proceedings will be halted. Advocates affiliated with the Bar Association will abstain from work today. The next steps will be clarified by this evening. The association has appealed to all advocates, judicial officers, and administrative departments for cooperation.
It should be noted that during a late-evening meeting of advocates on Monday, it was decided that Tuesday would also be a no-work day. The Bar Council also passed a resolution demanding the implementation of the Advocate Protection Act as soon as possible.
The Bar Council of India has also taken cognizance of the matter. They have ordered Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav to take action. Today, advocates will meet with officials from the Jalandhar Commissionerate, after which a decision will be made on the next course of action in the case.
The lawyer was threatened and ransom was also demanded.
Senior Jalandhar lawyer Mandeep Singh Sachdev was receiving extortion and death threats through a Facebook account operated from Canada. The sender demanded ₹1.5 lakh from the lawyer and threatened to defame him by making false allegations on social media if he did not pay.
He also threatened to download photos of the lawyer’s family from Facebook and make them public. The investigation revealed that this Facebook account was operated by Sandeep Singh, also known as Sunny, a Canadian resident. With the lawyer’s assistance, CIA staff laid a trap and apprehended the man who had come to collect the money.
