Dehradun: The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) has strongly condemned the death of Tripura student Angel Chakma in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and demanded the death penalty for the attackers. The organization says the attack was motivated by a racial discrimination mentality.
NESO submitted a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday (December 30, 2025), demanding strict action in this regard.
Demand for Anti-Racism Act and Special Police Stations
NESO demanded that a strict anti-racism law be enacted to prevent harassment of people from the Northeast in the country, enabling strict action in such cases.
The organization also demanded that at least one special police station be established in Uttarakhand to immediately register and take action on cases of racial violence and discrimination.
Declaring the attack a racial slur and a hate crime
The organization stated that Angel (24) and his brother Michael were attacked on December 9th, in which Angel suffered serious injuries and died during treatment on December 26th.
NESO alleges that the brothers were attacked because they were different in appearance and the attackers insulted them with racial slurs.
The organization stated that people from the Northeast across the country face humiliation and violence due to their appearance and language, which cannot be tolerated any longer.
Families and rights organizations also appeal
The All India Chakma Students Union has also written to Chief Minister Dhami, demanding
that the case be handed over to the CBI and
that the trial be transferred out of Dehradun, specifically to Delhi.
Angel’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, appealed to the government to ensure his safety.
“What happened to my son should not happen to any other Northeastern child.
The Northeast is also a part of India; we are also Indians.”
