The United States on Sunday said it is closely monitoring North Korea’s latest missile launches, after Pyongyang fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, marking its first missile test of the year.
The US Indo-Pacific Command confirmed awareness of the launches and said Washington is in close consultation with its regional allies and partners.
In an official statement, the command clarified that the missile activity does not pose an immediate danger to American forces or allied territories.
“Based on current assessments, this event does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory, or to our allies,” the command said, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Despite the assessment, the US stressed that its defence posture remains firm.
“The United States remains committed to the defence of the US homeland and our allies in the region,” the statement added, underscoring Washington’s security guarantees to South Korea and Japan.
The latest missile tests come at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing during his four-day state visit to China this week.
The launches also follow heightened global tensions after US President Donald Trump announced the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro during a military operation in Caracas.
Earlier, South Korea’s Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back warned of worsening security conditions around the Korean Peninsula, citing deepening military ties between North Korea and Russia.
“The security situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula has become more unstable than ever,” Ahn said during a forum on the US-South Korea alliance.
Ahn described Pyongyang’s cooperation with Moscow as a “grave challenge” to both regional and global security. South Korea’s intelligence agency estimates that around 15,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia since October last year to support its war in Ukraine.
In return, North Korea is believed to be gaining access to advanced Russian military technologies, further accelerating its nuclear and missile capabilities.
