North Korea Preparing to Introduce Police System to Maintain ‘Normal State’ Image

Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has announced plans to implement a police system in the country. This is being seen as an attempt to transform the country’s image from a closed and isolated nation to a normal one, where public security forces have previously handled law and order.

Proposal to be Considered in the Supreme People’s Assembly

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong-un made this announcement on Monday, the second and final day of the first session of the newly elected 15th Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA).

He said that the proposal to implement a “police system” will be considered in a future session.

Kim said the move aims to “further strengthen the legal and social order, improve regulations, and create an effective institutional framework to ensure national security and social stability.”

Emphasis on Strengthening Law and Order

Kim Jong-un described the police system as “essential” for state governance, saying that public order needs to be elevated to a higher level.

He also stated that after the police system is implemented, full preparations should be made to transform the existing Social Security Force into a police force. This suggests that the Ministry of Social Security, which handles public order, could be transformed into a police department.

Move Seen as an Attempt to Improve Image

An official at Seoul’s Unification Ministry described this move as an attempt to adopt a police system similar to other countries around the world, as North Korea seeks to break away from its closed image.

In another similar move, the Ministry of State Security was recently renamed the State Information Bureau.

Furthermore, at the recent SPA session, the name of the constitution was also changed from “Socialist Constitution” to simply “Constitution.”
