Northeast Now Central to India’s Growth Story: VP

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan said the northeastern region has been placed at the centre of India’s development narrative under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the 20th convocation ceremony of Mizoram University in Aizawl, the Vice President highlighted the Centre’s growing focus on improving infrastructure, connectivity and economic opportunities in the region.

He noted that the government’s sustained efforts are aimed at integrating the Northeast more closely with the rest of the country while unlocking its vast economic and cultural potential. According to him, the region is increasingly becoming an important pillar in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Focus on connectivity and infrastructure

During his address, the Vice President emphasized that improved connectivity has been a key factor in accelerating development in the Northeast. Major initiatives such as the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, regional air connectivity under the UDAN scheme, and the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for Northeast Region (PM-DevINE) are helping transform the region’s infrastructure landscape.

These initiatives aim to enhance transport networks, strengthen trade links and improve access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities. Better connectivity is also expected to boost tourism and investment across the northeastern states, which include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Officials say that such infrastructure projects are crucial for linking remote areas with the national economic mainstream and promoting balanced regional development.

Youth urged to create opportunities

Radhakrishnan also called upon young people to move beyond the traditional mindset of seeking jobs and instead focus on creating opportunities. Addressing graduating students, he encouraged them to become entrepreneurs, innovators and change-makers who contribute to the country’s growth.

He said the youth of the Northeast possess immense potential and creativity, and with the right support and skills they can play a significant role in shaping India’s future. The Vice President urged students to embrace technology, use social media responsibly and strive to become leaders in their chosen fields.

According to him, the region’s young population can drive economic transformation if they harness innovation, education and entrepreneurship effectively.

Northeast has strong economic potential

Highlighting the region’s strengths, the Vice President said the Northeast holds enormous potential in sectors such as tourism, organic farming, bamboo-based industries, handicrafts and digital services.

He noted that the region’s rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and scenic landscapes make it a major destination for eco-tourism. At the same time, its agricultural resources and skilled artisans offer opportunities for expanding exports and promoting local industries.

Radhakrishnan said the government’s development strategy aims to transform the Northeast into a vibrant economic hub while preserving its unique cultural and environmental heritage.

Concern over drug abuse among youth

During the convocation, the Vice President also expressed concern over the growing problem of narcotic drug abuse among young people in the region. He urged students to stay away from drugs and lead disciplined, purposeful lives.

He stressed that education should not only equip students with professional skills but also instil strong values and a sense of responsibility toward society. By focusing on healthy lifestyles and constructive activities, youth can contribute positively to both their communities and the nation.

Praise for Mizoram’s environmental awareness

Radhakrishnan also praised Mizoram for its high literacy rate, strong tribal traditions and commitment to environmental protection. He highlighted the efforts of Mizoram University in promoting sustainability, noting that the institution operates largely on solar energy.

He urged young graduates to take leadership roles in environmental conservation and sustainable development, emphasising that protecting nature is essential for long-term progress.

Vision of a developed India by 2047

Concluding his address, the Vice President congratulated the graduating students and urged them to contribute to the vision of building a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047. He said that inclusive development across all regions—including the Northeast—will be crucial in achieving this goal.

According to him, the growing focus on the Northeast reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that every part of the country benefits from India’s economic growth and development.
