New Zealand Cricket has made significant late alterations to its squad for the fourth and fifth T20 Internationals of the five-match series against India, releasing two players and adding several experienced campaigners as the BLACKCAPS seek to turn the tide after a 3–0 series deficit.
Pacer Kristian Clarke and opening batter Tim Robinson has both been released from New Zealand’s touring T20I squad in India ahead of the fourth T20I scheduled on January 28 in Visakhapatnam. Both players featured in earlier games but were omitted from the lineup after New Zealand lost the opening three games to India.
The decision comes as part of a broader reshuffle to strengthen the squad’s experience and balance for the remaining matches.
To bolster their resources, New Zealand have called up James Neesham, Lockie Ferguson, and Tim Seifert to join the squad in India, bringing added depth in both batting and bowling departments. Additionally, aggressive opener Finn Allen is expected to link up with the team ahead of the fifth and final T20I in Thiruvananthapuram.
The reshuffle aims to inject more experience into the side and offer a stronger challenge in the remaining T20Is, where India currently holds an unassailable lead.
India have dominated the series so far, winning the first three matches convincingly, with strong performances from batters and bowlers alike. As a result, New Zealand is reshaping their squad to experiment with combinations ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which begins in February.
With the series already lost, New Zealand Cricket appears to be using the final two matches to assess bench strength, rebuild confidence, and give experienced players a chance to find form under pressure. These changes could also help with final preparations for the upcoming global tournament.
