Auckland: The Indian bowlers performed brilliantly in the first ODI between India and New Zealand at Eden Park on Wednesday. India’s inexperienced fast bowling attack bundled out the hosts for just 185 in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh shattered the New Zealand batting with four wickets, while Gurnur Brar took three and Anshul Kamboj took two.
After winning the toss, India decided to bowl first, which proved to be the right decision. Arshdeep Singh provided India with the first breakthrough by dismissing Will Young for 9 runs in the fifth over. He then dismissed Henry Nicholls for 9 runs in the ninth over. Both batsmen were caught attempting pull shots. Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dheer took the catches. Thus, New Zealand lost two wickets for 44 runs.
Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell Steered the Innings
After the initial setbacks, Tim Seifert batted aggressively, scoring 38 runs off 43 balls. His innings included three fours and two sixes. He took advantage of the short boundaries at Eden Park and played some brilliant shots against the Indian fast bowlers. However, Gurnur Brar ended his innings in the 15th over. Substitute fielder Ruturaj Gaikwad caught him at mid-on.
Daryl Mitchell then tried to stabilize the innings, scoring 28 runs off 41 balls. He was supported by captain Tom Latham, but Brar took a brilliant one-handed catch in the 17th over to dismiss Latham for 3 runs.
The Indian bowlers then maintained the pressure. Daryl Mitchell, who had performed well in previous matches against India, was run out. Rohit Sharma’s superb fielding and KL Rahul’s quickness behind the stumps played a crucial role in this wicket. With this, New Zealand’s score became 99 for five.
Anshul Kamboj tightened the reins, Kohli took a brilliant catch
Anshul Kamboj then bowled Mitchell Santner for 4 in the 27th over, giving New Zealand their sixth wicket. Kamboj soon claimed his second wicket. Nathan Smith was dismissed for just 1 run. Virat Kohli took a brilliant diving catch at second slip.
On the other hand, Glenn Phillips tried to stabilize the innings. He added some runs with Kyle Jamieson, but Arshdeep Singh dismissed Jamieson for 1 run. Virat Kohli caught him at cover.
Arshdeep then dismissed Glenn Phillips in the 36th over for 30 runs. Shreyas Iyer took an easy catch at mid-off. After Phillips’ dismissal, New Zealand’s score became 146 for 8.
Blair Tickner’s aggressive batting helped New Zealand reach 185
New Zealand looked doomed before reaching 200, but Blair Tickner batted aggressively in the final overs to help the team reach a respectable total. He added crucial runs for the ninth wicket with Jacob Duffy.
Tickner smashed 34 runs in just 23 balls, including four sixes. Duffy scored 15 runs in 21 balls. The two batsmen added 23 runs against Arshdeep Singh in the 38th over, with Tickner hitting three sixes.
However, Gurnur Brar dismissed Tickner in the 41st over, ending New Zealand’s innings. KL Rahul caught him behind the wicket. Thus, New Zealand were all out for 185 in 40.2 overs.
For India, Arshdeep Singh took four wickets for 70 runs. Gurnur Brar took three wickets for 44 runs, while Anshul Kamboj took two wickets for just 22 runs in 10 overs. Kamboj also bowled two maiden overs during this period. Kamboj, who proved expensive in the last ODI against West Indies, had a very impressive performance in this match.
