Odisha Shocker: Drug-Addicted Son Allegedly Kills Father Over De-Addiction Medicine Dispute

Bhubaneswar: A 50-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his drug-addicted son following an argument over de-addiction medication in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar, police said on Tuesday.

The victim was identified as S. Duryadhan (50), a labour contractor, while the accused has been identified as his 25-year-old son, S. Debaraj.

Argument Over Drug De-Addiction Medication Turns Fatal

According to police, preliminary investigation suggests that the accused attacked his father after a dispute related to his drug addiction and the treatment process.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Biswaranjan Senapati said the accused was a habitual brown sugar addict and had earlier been admitted to a de-addiction centre by his father.

Police said Duryadhan used to mix the prescribed de-addiction medicine into a bidi as advised and give it to his son whenever he asked for a cigarette or bidi. However, the arrangement reportedly led to repeated arguments between the two.

Father Attacked With Iron Pipe, Stone

Police said a heated argument broke out between the father and son on Monday night, following which the victim’s wife and other family members left the house fearing escalation.

The next morning, another argument reportedly took place when Duryadhan offered his son a bidi containing the prescribed medicine, while Debaraj demanded a regular bidi.

During the altercation, the accused allegedly attacked his father with an iron pipe and later hit him with a stone, leading to his death.

Accused Detained, Investigation Underway

After receiving information, police teams along with a scientific investigation unit reached the spot and started an inquiry.

Police said the accused has been detained and will be produced before the court. Officials are investigating all aspects of the case, including the family’s statement that the accused also had a brain tumour and would sometimes become aggressive.
