One killed, nine injured in IED blast in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Islamabad

Pakistan: At least one person was killed and nine others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday. According to local media, police said the blast occurred near the Nawarkhel turn on Begukhel Road.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Faridullah, while the injured include Mir Ahmed, Abdul Malik, Umar Khan, Masal Khan, and Syed Jan. Following the blast, a Rescue 1122 team arrived at the scene and admitted the injured to the City Hospital in Lakki.

Continued attacks target police officers

This blast comes at a time when attacks targeting law enforcement agencies have increased in Pakistan, particularly in border provinces like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A day earlier, four policemen were killed in two separate shooting incidents in Lakki Marwat and Bannu districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In Sarai Naurang town of Lakki Marwat, unidentified assailants on motorcycles opened fire on traffic police, killing Traffic Police Incharge Naurang Jalal Khan, Constable Azizullah, and Constable Abdullah. The attackers fled the scene, prompting police to launch a search and investigation.

Meanwhile, in the Mandan area of ​​Bannu, unidentified gunmen attacked Constable Rashid Khan while he was returning from his home to the Mandan police station for duty, killing him.

Earlier, on January 3, one person was killed and three others, including two policemen, were injured in an attack on a police post in Barang Tehsil, Bajaur district. According to police, the attackers used both heavy and light weapons.

HRCP expresses concern over rising militant violence in the province

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during 2025. In its latest report Caught in the Crossfire: Civilians, Security and the Crisis of Justice in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Merged Districts, the Commission cited data from the Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.

According to the report, at least 82 militant attacks took place across the country in July 2025, with nearly two-thirds recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its former tribal areas. Meanwhile, in September 2025, 45 militant attacks took place in the province, killing 54 people and injuring 49.

Of these, 20 attacks occurred in the province’s merged districts, killing a total of 21 people, including six Pakistani security personnel, three militants, and 12 civilians, while seven others were injured. According to the HRCP, Awami National Party (ANP) provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain stated that the security situation is more serious than it appears, and militant organizations, including the terrorist organization Daesh, are active not only in the merged districts but also in the inhabited areas of the province.
