Opposition likely to bring impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner

It is being saidthat in the meeting, the idea of ​​bringing an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Parliament was discussed. A day before, on Sunday, the Election Commission had held a big press conference.

In this, CEC Gyanesh Kumar had said that the figures shown in the PPT presentation by some people are not of the Election Commission. Targeting Rahul Gandhi, CEC said that either an affidavit on the allegations of vote theft should be submitted or an apology must be tendered to the country. There is no third option. If the affidavit is not received in seven days, the allegations will be considered baseless, he further added.

No formal discussion yet

Amid allegations of ‘vote theft’, opposition parties may bring an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the monsoon session of Parliament. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain also spoke on this issue and said that the party is ready to use all democratic methods, including an impeachment motion if needed. However, there has been no formal discussion on it yet.

‘Will use all powers of democracy’

Hussain told ANI, “If needed, we will use all powers of democracy under the rules. So far, we have not discussed anything about impeachment, but we can do anything if needed.”

Protests against SIR

The opposition has been protesting against SIR in both Houses of Parliament. They allege that the Election Commission’s exercise is aimed at disenfranchising voters ahead of the Bihar assembly elections later this year. They are demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses. Since the monsoon session began on July 21, there has been very little work in Parliament except for the discussion on Operation Sindoor in both Houses. The proceedings of the House have been adjourned repeatedly, mostly on the SIR issue.

Rahul reiterates allegations of Vote Theft

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi hit back at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Election Commission is seeking an affidavit from him but not from BJP MP Anurag Thakur when he makes the same allegations.
