New Delhi: Opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc marched towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday, raising slogans and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The march was organised as part of the Opposition’s ongoing campaign against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Opposition has alleged irregularities in the revision process and has demanded that the SIR exercise be scrapped and voters whose names were allegedly deleted be restored to the electoral rolls.
Opposition MPs March from Parliament to ECI
INDIA bloc MPs assembled at Makar Dwar of Parliament before beginning their march towards Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the Election Commission. The march was scheduled to begin around 11 a.m., with Opposition leaders and MPs from both Houses participating.
Leaders including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders have been raising concerns over the SIR process and the functioning of the Election Commission.
The Opposition has also demanded the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that decisions related to the electoral-roll revision were taken in a manner that undermined confidence in the poll panel.
The Election Commission, however, has rejected suggestions of a split within the three-member body and maintained that decisions relating to SIR were taken unanimously.
Opposition Demands Resignation of PM Modi and Amit Shah
The Opposition’s demands extend beyond the Election Commission, with INDIA bloc leaders also seeking the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Congress leaders have alleged that the Centre and the Election Commission are responsible for what they describe as irregularities in the electoral process. These are political allegations made by the Opposition and have not been established as facts.
During the protest, Congress MP Dr Dharamveer Gandhi alleged that millions of voters had been deleted from electoral rolls and described the alleged deletions as a major attack on democratic rights. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain demanded a high-level inquiry and called for the restoration of voters allegedly removed during the SIR exercise.
Supreme Court Observations on Form 6
The march came a day after the Supreme Court said it had not approved any modified version of Form 6, the statutory application used for enrolment as a voter. The court said it would examine the Election Commission’s records to determine whether changes had been made and who authorised them.
The Opposition has cited the court’s observations while intensifying its criticism of the Election Commission. The poll panel had earlier stated that the declaration attached to Form 6 for the SIR exercise had been upheld by the Supreme Court.
Security Tightened in Central Delhi
Security was tightened across central Delhi ahead of the march, with police and paramilitary personnel deployed along the expected route from Parliament to the Election Commission office. Barricades were placed around key areas, including the ECI headquarters and Jantar Mantar.
Delhi Police said prohibitory orders under Section 163 were in force in the New Delhi district and that gatherings were not permitted in the restricted areas.
The INDIA bloc’s march is part of its wider “Save Democracy” campaign, with Opposition parties organising protests and district-level programmes over the SIR exercise and their demands concerning the Election Commission.
