Orange Alert in Himachal Today: Hailstorm, Storm Warning; Snow in High Hills, Rain Likely for 6 Days

Shimla, Himachal: There’s no hope of respite from rain in Himachal Pradesh for the next week. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain, storms, and hailstorms in 10 districts today and tomorrow. An orange alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts, while a yellow alert has been issued for all other districts except Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.

During this period, heavy rain and hailstorms are forecast in low and medium-altitude areas. Snowfall is also expected in the higher elevations of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu districts. Winds of up to 50 to 60 kilometers per hour are possible in many areas.

According to the Meteorological Department, the weather in the mountains will remain consistently bad until April 8th. No warning has been issued for April 5th to 7th, but the weather will remain bad throughout the state. The Western Disturbance will become even stronger on April 8th. In view of this, an orange alert has been issued for heavy rain and hailstorms.

Advisory Issued Amid Avalanche Threat

The Meteorological Department has advised people to be cautious and avoid traveling to high altitude areas. The administration has banned tourism activities, especially in the North Portal area of the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, due to the avalanche threat. Lahaul-Spiti DC Kiran Bhadana said that the hills around the tunnel, the Chandra River bridge area, and the slopes are highly vulnerable to avalanches and debris falls. In view of this, tourism activities have been stopped in these areas.

Temperature Drop and Impact on Agriculture

The temperature will drop by 4 to 5 degrees.

Following the rain and snowfall, temperatures will drop by 4 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next week. People typically struggle with the heat in April, but this time, the cold didn’t subside even in the higher elevations during the first week of April.

The changing weather is troubling the state’s farmers and orchardists. Apples are currently blooming in the state. Clear weather is crucial, but the weather has been inclement for the past week and a half. Hailstorms in many areas are wreaking havoc on farmers’ and orchardists’ crops.
