Orange alert issued for dense fog and cold wave in Punjab; Cold day conditions expected in four districts

Dense fog is expected in all districts of Punjab today, with a cold wave likely in four districts. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in this regard. Cold day conditions are also possible in Mohali, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, and Patiala.

In the last 24 hours, the maximum temperature in the state has dropped by two degrees, falling three degrees below normal. A similar situation prevails with night temperatures, which are also continuing to drop. The lowest temperature was recorded in Bathinda at 4.2 degrees Celsius. However, the weather will remain dry.

Zero visibility recorded in Amritsar and Halwara

According to the Meteorological Department, a western disturbance is present at high altitudes over North Pakistan and surrounding areas. This is causing strong westerly winds (jet stream) and leading to cold wave conditions. During this time, zero visibility was recorded in Amritsar and Halwara, 10 meters in Ballowal Saunkhri, and 150 meters in Bathinda.

Today, very dense to extremely dense fog is expected in Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala. Similarly, dense fog is likely in some areas of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Firozpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Rupnagar, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Malerkotla.

Cold day conditions are possible in Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and the districts bordering Rajasthan: Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa.

Chandigarh and Rupnagar saw the biggest drop in temperature

Regarding the maximum temperature over the last 24 hours, Chandigarh saw the biggest drop of 5.3 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Chandigarh was recorded at 13.4 degrees Celsius. Rupnagar and Hoshiarpur recorded a drop in temperature of 6.2 and 4.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The maximum temperature ranged between 11.2 and 19.2 degrees Celsius. Amritsar recorded a temperature of 11.8 degrees Celsius.
