Osman Hadi Case: Two Top Suspects Cross into India via Meghalaya, Bangladesh Police Confirm

Dhaka: Two key suspects in the murder case of Bangladeshi political activist Osman Hadi, Faisal Karim Masood and Alamgir Sheikh, have reportedly fled to India by crossing the Meghalaya border. This information has been confirmed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
DMP Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam told a press conference that the suspects entered India through the Haluaghat border (Mymensingh) with the help of local accomplices. He said that after entering India, they were first picked up by a man named Purti and later by a taxi driver Sami who took them to Tura town in Meghalaya.

Unofficial reports indicate that Purti and Sami have been detained by Indian authorities, although official confirmation is still pending.

Coordination between Bangladesh and Indian agencies

The DMP stated that Bangladesh is continuously coordinating with Indian agencies through formal and informal channels to ensure the arrest and extradition of both suspects.

Following reports of the escape of Faisal Karim Masood and Alamgir Sheikh, Bangladeshi authorities, in coordination with the Border Security Force and local administration, launched a swift operation.

Osman Hadi, a prominent political figure in Bangladesh and a staunch critic of both India and the Awami League, was shot in the head by masked assailants in Dhaka on December 12. He was airlifted to Singapore in critical condition but died six days later.

Unrest and violence spread after the assassination

Osman Hadi was among the leaders of last year’s July Uprising, which played a key role in the fall of the Sheikha Hasina government.
His assassination sparked widespread unrest in Dhaka and other cities. Mobs attacked the offices of newspapers (Prothom Alo and The Daily Star) and targeted cultural institutions (Chhayanat and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi).
The violence also spread to central Bangladesh, where a Hindu factory worker was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh.

The Prime Minister and local administration took strict measures to control the situation, but the incidents further escalated political and social tensions in the country.

    Context and Current Action

Bangladesh has intensified coordination with India after receiving information about the escape of Faisal Karim Masood and Alamgir Sheikh.

Local and central agencies have been directed to arrest both suspects.

Given the gravity of the matter, Bangladesh has activated its border security and intelligence network to arrest the suspects as soon as possible and ensure their extradition.
