Kolkata : More than 10 people were injured after a government-owned passenger bus lost control and overturned near the Topsia intersection in Kolkata. The bus was travelling from Park Circus towards Science City when it suddenly tilted and crashed onto the road with a loud noise. Eyewitnesses said passengers began screaming in panic as the vehicle fell on its side. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing the crash. Many passengers, including the conductor, were trapped inside the overturned bus. Since the front door could not be opened, rescuers broke the rear window and pulled out passengers one by one.
Sixteen Injured, Traffic Hit; Probe Underway
About 16 people were injured in the accident, several of them seriously. Police, fire services and disaster management teams quickly reached the scene and shifted the injured to Chittaranjan National Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. The accident led to severe traffic congestion at the Topsia intersection and surrounding areas. A senior Kolkata Police traffic official said CCTV footage from the spot has been collected and the exact cause of the accident is under investigation. If required, a forensic examination of the damaged bus will also be conducted.
Tyre Burst Suspected, Bus Lacked Valid Fitness Certificate
Sources said the accident may have been triggered by a burst front tyre. It has also emerged that the bus was operating despite its fitness certificate having expired, raising serious questions about how it was allowed to run on a long route like Howrah–Baruipur. Based on statements from passengers and eyewitnesses, police will register a case under relevant sections. A separate case is also likely under road safety laws for illegally operating the bus without a valid fitness certificate, thereby endangering passengers’ lives.
