Pak Military Setbacks and Extrajudicial Killings in Balochistan

Balochistan continues to witness one of its bloodiest periods in recent times, with dozens of Pakistani Army and security personnel reportedly killed in a series of attacks launched by Baloch armed groups beginning on July 5.

According to local media reports citing statements from security forces, more than 100 alleged Baloch fighters have also been killed during the same period. Of these, 64 deaths have been linked to Operation Shaban, a military offensive launched against Baloch insurgent groups.

Following the July 5 attacks, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) is believed to have taken precautionary measures in anticipation of retaliatory military operations. These reportedly included relocating from established bases, dispersing into smaller units, and concealing positions to avoid both ground and aerial surveillance.

The reported success of Operation Shaban has raised questions about the Pakistani military’s intelligence capabilities. If security forces were able to accurately identify and eliminate dozens of insurgents within days, critics ask why similar operations were not launched earlier to prevent the attacks and reduce casualties. Instead, questions are being raised over whether the military has been largely reactive, responding only after major incidents occur.

More than a year into the renewed insurgency, armed Baloch groups continue to challenge the state’s authority by blocking highways, temporarily seizing control of areas, and carrying out attacks on security personnel. This has intensified public scrutiny over the effectiveness of Pakistan’s security strategy in the province.

The Pakistan Army has also faced long-standing allegations from rights groups and critics over extrajudicial killings, with claims that some victims are later labelled as militants to justify military operations. Pakistani authorities have consistently denied such allegations.

Given the absence of independent verification and limited access to conflict-affected areas, it remains difficult to confirm the exact number of militants or civilians killed during recent operations. The lack of transparency and independent accountability continues to fuel concerns over the human rights situation and the broader security environment in Balochistan.
