Islamabad: Four miners were killed and five others injured after a gas explosion occurred inside a coal mine in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, officials said.
The incident took place on Sunday in Harnai district after gas accumulated inside the coal mine, according to official sources.
Following the explosion, rescue teams from the Pakistan Army rushed to the site and launched operations. The bodies of four miners were recovered from the mine, while five injured workers were rescued.
The injured miners were subsequently shifted to Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, for further medical treatment.
Gas Accumulation Triggers Deadly Mine Explosion
According to officials, the explosion occurred after gas accumulated inside the mine while miners were working. Gas explosions and poisonous-gas incidents have repeatedly posed serious risks to workers in Balochistan’s coal-mining areas.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by miners working underground, where the accumulation of methane and other gases can lead to explosions or poisoning.
Three Miners Died In Balochistan In August
The latest explosion comes weeks after another fatal incident in Balochistan.
In August, three coal miners, including two Afghan nationals, died after inhaling poisonous methane gas while working inside a coal mine in Duki district.
Officials said methane gas had accumulated inside the mine, causing the workers to lose consciousness. Other miners informed authorities and local rescue teams, following which personnel from the Mines and Minerals Department launched a rescue operation.
Rescuers eventually located the three miners inside the mine, but all three had already died. The deceased included two Afghan nationals and one Pakistani national, according to local reports.
34 Miners Killed In July Methane Gas Explosion
In another major mining tragedy in Balochistan in July, 34 miners were killed following a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in the Sorange area.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), methane gas accumulated inside the mine before the explosion. A large section of the mine collapsed after the blast, trapping workers under the rubble.
Officials said 41 miners were inside the mine when the explosion occurred. Rescue teams later recovered the bodies of 34 miners.
The repeated fatal incidents have raised concerns over the risks associated with gas accumulation and safety conditions in Pakistan’s coal mines, particularly in Balochistan.
The latest Harnai explosion has added to a series of deadly mining accidents in the province this year, with rescue teams continuing to respond to emergencies involving underground gas accumulation.
