Pakistan men’s hockey captain Shakeel Ammad Butt launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) upon the team’s return from a turbulent Australia tour of the FIH Pro League, calling the experience humiliating and severely mismanaged. He spoke to reporters at Lahore airport, expressing deep frustration with how players were treated.
Butt stunned the sporting world with claims that the squad was left to fend for itself in Australia, including having to clean kitchens and wash dishes before matches due to lack of proper support and accommodation. He questioned how top-level athletes could be expected to perform under such degrading conditions.
The controversy deepened after reports of planned hotel bookings falling through despite the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) releasing over 10 million rupees to the PHF for accommodation leaving players stranded at Sydney airport for 13–14 hours, forced to roam the streets until alternate lodging was arranged. The Airbnb secured covered only 10 of the 13 days, forcing a shift to cheaper accommodation mid-tour.
Pakistan lost all its matches during the Australia stint, including games against hosts Australia and Germany, adding to player frustration. Butt criticised the current management, stating “We can’t work with this current management,” and called for structural reforms, including the appointment of a foreign coach and better administrative support if the team is to improve its performance.
In response to the uproar, PSB Director-General Noor us Sabah confirmed that a detailed report on the Australia tour fiasco is being prepared for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has ordered an inquiry into the mismanagement and poor conditions faced by the national team.
