Islamabad: A police constable was shot dead after unidentified gunmen opened fire on him in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday, according to local media reports.

The incident took place in the Sarvekai area of Upper South Waziristan district, where the police personnel was reportedly on his way to duty when he was attacked.

According to officials quoted by local media, the constable, who was posted at the Sarvekai Police Station, was ambushed near a stream in the Moley Khan Sarai area. He died at the scene before medical assistance could arrive.

Police launch search operation after attack

Following the shooting, police and other law enforcement agencies reached the spot, secured the area and collected evidence.

Authorities have launched a search operation to trace and arrest those responsible. Officials said the investigation is being carried out from multiple angles to determine the motive behind the attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest incident.

Security personnel continue to face attacks

The killing comes amid a rise in attacks targeting police and security personnel in Pakistan, particularly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

On July 15, at least two police personnel were killed and 26 people, including 22 police officers, were injured in separate attacks in Bannu and Lower Dir districts.

According to local reports, armed assailants attacked the Miryab Police Station using an explosives-laden vehicle before engaging security personnel in a prolonged gunfight.

Recent attacks raise security concerns

Police officials said the attackers had also blown up a damaged bridge leading to the police station to delay reinforcements and rescue teams.

The banned outfit Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the Miryab Police Station attack, stating that an explosives-laden vehicle had been used during the assault.

In another operation in Lower Dir, two police personnel were killed and several others injured during an exchange of fire with armed attackers after security forces launched a search operation based on intelligence inputs.

The latest incidents underscore the continuing security challenges in Pakistan’s northwestern regions, where attacks on law enforcement agencies have increased in recent months.
