Amritsar: Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Monday said that Pakistan’s interference in the state has increased following Operation Sindoor, with fresh infiltration points discovered in Pathankot and large consignments of small arms being smuggled across the border.
Addressing reporters in Amritsar after reviewing security arrangements ahead of the festive season, Yadav said that intelligence inputs confirm attempts by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to destabilize Punjab. “Since the floods, security has been stepped up. We have also discovered infiltration points in the Pathankot area, where Pakistan is planning to push in drugs and weapons,” he said.
According to the DGP, 78 small arms were recovered in September alone, including 27 pistols from Ferozepur, 21 from Fazilka, and 29 from Amritsar. “Pakistan is sending small arms along with drug shipments in order to disrupt Punjab’s atmosphere. Coordination between Punjab Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) has been strengthened, and results are showing,” Yadav said.
To secure the border and key districts, 57 additional companies have been deployed in the state. Seven BSF companies will be stationed in border districts, while 50 Punjab Police companies are being spread across the state to intensify checking operations.
Yadav also acknowledged a rise in ransom calls but said most cases were solved. “Ninety percent of ransom calls originate from local people. If police are informed immediately, accused are swiftly caught,” he said.
The DGP highlighted the Punjab Police’s close coordination with central agencies, citing the recent arrests of Babbar Khalsa terrorist Pindi from the UAE and bomber Happy Pasian from the US.
Since September 2024, police have busted 88 terror modules and arrested dozens of accused in murder and terror cases. Under the War Against Drugs campaign launched in March, 20,414 cases have been registered, leading to 31,177 arrests and the seizure of 1,342 kg of heroin.
