NRI couple, son killed in Panipat taxi-truck crash

A tragic road accident in Haryana’s Panipat district claimed the lives of an NRI couple and their son when the taxi they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck on the highway. The victims were returning from the United States and were on their way to Amritsar when the accident occurred early in the morning near the Rohtak bypass.

The incident has shocked relatives and residents of the area, highlighting once again the dangers posed by poor visibility and vehicles parked on highways.

    Accident occurred near Rohtak bypass

According to police and local reports, the accident took place near a petrol pump on the Rohtak bypass in Panipat. The taxi carrying the NRI family was travelling towards Amritsar when it suddenly rammed into a truck that was parked on the road.

Officials said the crash happened early in the morning when visibility was low due to fog. The driver reportedly failed to notice the stationary truck in time, leading to a high-impact collision.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the taxi was badly damaged, leaving the passengers trapped inside.

NRI couple dies on the spot

The victims have been identified as Ranjit Singh Sandhu (63) and his wife Satinder Kaur (61), who were residents of the United States. The couple had reportedly been living abroad for several years and were involved in a transport business there.

Police officials said the couple died on the spot due to the severity of their injuries. Their son, who was also travelling with them, succumbed to injuries during the accident.

The taxi driver survived the crash and is currently assisting police in the investigation.

Journey from Delhi to Amritsar turned fatal

According to reports, the family had recently arrived in India from the United States. They had initially planned to travel directly to Amritsar by flight, but their tickets were reportedly cancelled due to disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict affecting international routes.

After landing at Delhi airport, the family hired a taxi to travel by road to Amritsar. Unfortunately, their journey ended in tragedy before they could reach their destination.

Truck driver fled after the accident

Police said the truck involved in the accident was standing on the highway when the taxi collided with it. After the crash, the truck driver reportedly fled the scene.

Authorities have launched a search operation to trace the driver and determine why the truck was parked on the road without proper warning signals or safety measures.

    Police investigation underway

Soon after the accident, local police reached the spot and shifted the bodies to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Police are examining whether negligence on the part of the truck driver or poor visibility due to fog contributed to the crash.

Officials have also urged motorists to exercise caution while driving during foggy conditions, especially on highways where parked vehicles can pose serious hazards.

    Rising concern over highway safety

The accident has once again raised concerns over road safety and the issue of heavy vehicles being parked on highways without warning signs. Such incidents often lead to fatal crashes, particularly during low-visibility conditions like fog or heavy rain.

Authorities have repeatedly advised truck drivers to park vehicles only at designated areas and ensure proper reflective markers or hazard lights are used to warn approaching motorists.
