Panjab University Abolishes Vetting Committee and SOPs After Student Protest

Chandigarh: The protesting student organizations at Panjab University (PU Bachao Morcha) have scored a major victory. A committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor of the university has accepted a key demand and recommended the complete scrapping of the waiting committee and SOPs of the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC).

According to the official communication issued today:
•The vetting committee for approving speakers stands abolished.
•All Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to PUCSC—especially those concerning financial accountability—will be scrapped.
•Any new SOPs will be created only with the active participation of PUCSC members and student organisations to ensure transparency.
•The Dean Student Welfare (DSW) has been directed to take fresh feedback from student organisations before framing any new guidelines.

Directions to seek feedback from student organizations

The Dean of Student Welfare (DSW) has been directed to obtain fresh feedback from student organizations on the new SOPs and submit a decision to the Vice Chancellor based on the views of student leaders.

Action on affiliation of Haryana colleges

A separate order also said that matters related to the affiliation of Haryana colleges with Panjab University will be referred to the concerned authority. This decision clarifies the role of the government.

This step is considered important in resolving the pending dispute between students and the university administration. Student organisations have welcomed this decision and expressed hope that now the rights of students will be better protected on the university campus.
