Panjab University Students Withdraw Agitation After University Withdraws Affidavit Requirement

Chandigarh: The students’ agitation at Panjab University (PU) has been called off following the University’s decision to withdraw the affidavit/undertaking requirement for students enrolled in first-year courses and programs for the 2025–2026 academic session.

PU authorities stated that the issue has been resolved in the larger interest of students to ensure that academic activities continue smoothly on campus. The agitating students have also agreed to withdraw their legal case related to the matter.

    University Emphasizes Open Dialogue

The University reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a constructive academic environment, encouraging open dialogue while respecting diverse viewpoints and opinions.

    Background

The controversy began after PU introduced a new rule requiring first-year students to submit an affidavit or undertaking, which many student groups claimed was restrictive and unnecessary.

The move sparked widespread protests across the campus, with student organizations staging demonstrations and filing a legal petition against the decision.

The University maintained that the affidavit was intended to streamline administrative processes, but facing growing opposition, it initiated discussions with student representatives.

Following multiple rounds of talks, both sides reached an understanding, leading to the withdrawal of the affidavit condition and restoration of normalcy on campus.
