Parliament’s winter session opens with uproar

The winter session of the Indian Parliament began yesterday, December 1st. Before the start of the session, Prime Minister Modi urged MPs to channel valuable time into serious reflection and decisive achievement, rather than wasting it. He stated that this time, Parliament needed delivery, not drama. However, the same uproar ensued. Parliament was first adjourned until 12 noon, then until 2 p.m., then for the entire day, and again until 11 a.m. the next day. It was expected that the House would discuss national security issues, including terrorism and gangsterism.
Planned discussions on unemployment, economic progress, and equality were disrupted when opposition leaders raised procedural grievances, leading to sharp exchanges and further adjournments. Meanwhile, the House was expected to debate voter list revisions and consider new legislation, but arguments and accusations dominated, stalling policy progress.

Meanwhile, the government passed the second amendment to the Manipur Goods and Services Tax Bill in the Lok Sabha with its majority. On Monday, it was decided to give two parliamentary committees more time to submit their reports on the Insolvency and Public Trust Act (Amendment) Bill. The Election Commission also extended the SIR (Intensive Revision) in nine states and three union territories by a week, following complaints from BLO officers that the short deadline was creating problems following a spate of suicides.

The Intensive Revision will now continue until December 11, instead of December 4. The draft voter list will be published on December 16. The final voter list will be released on February 14, instead of February 7. But these discussions were over by 11 a.m. The uproar continued. The first day of Parliament’s work was marred by adjournments and other adjournments. A democratic system expects MPs to deliver, not drama, but to ensure a free discussion during the remaining days of the autumn session. The country will get what it deserves, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said.
