Barwani, MP: At least 16 people were injured when a private passenger bus travelling from Bhopal to Alirajpur overturned in the Anjad police station area of Barwani district early Sunday morning, officials said.
Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries are life-threatening, offering relief amid the chaos.
Accident Details
The mishap occurred around 4:30 a.m. near Talwada Deb on the Barwani-Thikri Highway.
According to Barwani Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dheeraj Babbar, the bus swerved sharply to avoid an animal that suddenly darted onto the road, causing it to lose balance and overturn.
“A passenger bus travelling from Bhopal met with an accident near Talwada in the Anjad area and overturned. Preliminary reports suggest the accident occurred when an animal suddenly appeared on the road,” ASP Babbar told IANS.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as the packed bus skidded off the dimly lit highway and rolled over, scattering luggage and passengers along the roadside.
Local residents were first to respond, rushing to the site to help victims before police and emergency services arrived. Quick action from police, health workers, and district administration teams ensured timely rescue and medical assistance.
All 16 injured passengers, including men, women, and children, were taken to hospitals in Anjad and Barwani.
Doctors reported fractures, bruises, and minor head injuries, but confirmed that most patients are in stable condition and under observation.
Investigation and Aftermath
Traffic on the Barwani-Thikri Highway was disrupted for several hours as cranes and recovery vehicles worked to clear debris and upright the bus.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause, examining factors such as road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and possible speeding, though the animal crossing is being treated as the main cause.
The district administration has assured support and compensation for the affected families.
The overturned bus, operated by a private transport company, was on a routine inter-district route to Alirajpur in western Madhya Pradesh.
