Pathankot: Security agencies were put on alert after a missile-like object was found in the UBDC (Upper Bari Doab Canal) on the Sujanpur-Jugial Road in Pathankot on Saturday.

A resident of Shahpuri Gate reportedly spotted the suspicious object while returning home from a factory. Alarmed by its appearance, he informed another person who had come to the canal to feed fish, as well as other people nearby.

Local residents then called the police helpline 112. Sujanpur police reached the spot, following which an Indian Army team also arrived and began examining the object. A bomb disposal squad was later called in and a security cordon was established around the area.

SSP Says Old Bomb Shell Found In Canal

Pathankot SSP Manpreet Singh said that a bomb shell had been found in the UBDC and appeared to be old.

According to the SSP, the shell may have been carried downstream by the strong flow of water from somewhere upstream in recent days. It became visible after the water level in the canal receded.

The Army’s bomb disposal team has been informed and will take the shell into its custody before disposing of it safely.

Factory Worker First Spotted Suspicious Object

According to eyewitness Mohan Lal, a resident of Shahpur Gate in Sujanpur, he was returning home after finishing work at a factory when he stopped near the canal to wash his face and hands.

He noticed a suspicious object partially submerged in the water. Its appearance resembled a missile or bomb, prompting him to immediately alert the police control room by calling 112.

Area Sealed As Security Precaution

After receiving the information, a police team led by ASI Jaspal Singh reached the spot.

As a precaution, police sealed the area and ensured that no one touched the suspicious object. The bomb disposal squad was called to examine it.

Officials said the object would be removed from the water only under the supervision of experts. Its exact nature and whether it poses any explosive threat will be established after examination.

Army’s 103 Engineering Team To Dispose Of Shell

According to military sources, the object is a live bomb shell. Although it is old, officials said it could still be dangerous and should not be handled without proper precautions.

The required paperwork will be completed before the Army’s 103 Engineering team is called to the spot. The shell will then be safely taken out of the water and either neutralised or disposed of through a controlled blast, as deemed appropriate by the experts.
