Patiala: MLA Pathanmajra Arrested in Mining Case now; Judicial Custody extended by 14 Days

The troubles for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra in Punjab continue to mount. On Monday, the Patiala Police arrested him in connection with a mining case registered at the Julkan police station. Amidst tight security, he was produced before a Patiala court, where his judicial custody in a rape case was extended by another 14 days, and he was subsequently sent to Bathinda Jail.

SP Gurbans Singh Bains stated that Pathanmajra, who was already lodged in Bathinda Jail in connection with a rape case, was produced before the court. During the proceedings, he surrendered in connection with an old mining case registered at the Julkan police station, following which the police formally placed him under arrest.

Currently, the police have not sought his remand in this case, as the investigation is still ongoing; remand will be sought for further interrogation if and when deemed necessary.

Pathanmajra’s counsel, Bikramjit Singh Bhullar, stated that an appeal has been filed in court requesting that the MLA be transferred to Patiala Jail. He argued that since all the FIRs registered against the legislator pertain to Patiala district, he should be shifted from Bathinda Jail to Patiala Jail.

He further clarified that this is not a new case, but rather an old matter related to the Mining Act, in which other co-accused individuals have already been granted bail. In this particular case, Pathanmajra was the only remaining accused yet to be arrested—a formality that has now been completed.
