New Delhi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has ordered the arrest of 35 people, including 19 Indians, for allegedly posting misleading videos and online content amid ongoing tensions in the region.
The action was taken following a directive from UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi. He ordered two groups of accused to appear in court for speedy trial in connection with content posted on digital platforms. Initially, 10 people were named, while 25 others were later identified, bringing the total to 35.
Officials stated that social media monitoring was increased due to the security situation in the region. During the investigation, videos were discovered that could mislead people or impact the country’s security system. Some videos also attempted to evoke an emotional response by featuring children.
Security concerns heightened after drone attack
This action comes at a time of heightened security concerns in the region. Oil loading at the Port of Fujairah was temporarily halted following an alleged Iranian drone attack. The port handles approximately one million barrels per day of UAE Murban crude, representing approximately one percent of global demand.
Meanwhile, flights were also briefly halted after a drone attack on a fuel storage facility near Dubai International Airport. Plumes of black smoke were seen in the Dubai sky, although authorities later confirmed the fire was under control.
Misleading and edited videos found
The investigation found that the accused had shared a variety of videos and posts related to military incidents. Some videos showed scenes of missiles being intercepted by air defense systems or debris found at the scene, which were real but could have revealed sensitive information related to defense capabilities and spread fear among the public.
Furthermore, some videos were digitally edited or created with the help of artificial intelligence to appear real. In some cases, videos of incidents in other countries were shared as being from the UAE.
Some of the accused also shared posts praising a country involved in the conflict and its political and military leadership, which was described as against the UAE’s national interests.
UAE Law Provides Strict Punishment
The UAE Public Prosecution stated that all suspects have been detained and investigations are ongoing.
Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi stated that under UAE law, spreading misleading information affecting public safety is punishable by at least one year in prison and a fine of not less than 100,000 dirhams.
Authorities have previously warned people not to take photos or videos of the scene or share any content related to defense activities, as this could expose sensitive information and spread unnecessary fear among the public.
